Call me the Cobain Cowboy

Winter is coming. I repeat, winter is coming. So, we are in a mad dash at the cabin to get the bathroom and (soon) bedroom set up so we can hunker down for the rainy season! We currently have no shower, floors, or kitchen, but that’s okay when it comes to renovation life. But, peep the closed-up walls with new stucco. The trick was to let the compound dry overnight and match the original texture. It was not an easy task, but we managed it with the help of a local handyman.

The good news is the wood-burning stove is in tip-top shape, and all the firewood for the winter is stacked and ready to go. Despite not having the interior complete, we will be enjoying it as is. It’s the journey, not the destination, friends. Always remember that!

With that we have made more progress! We completed all the framing, insulation, and shower backer board for the evergreen tile to be installed next week – yes, next week!

It’s going to look great. This includes the electrical work for the light switches, new vent, and electrical light switches. Is it weird to be so excited about something so ordinary. But if that’s not worthy of joy, are we ready to install the heated tile floors!

Yes, heated tiles! We decided to splurge here because, well, it’s so cold in the winter, and I can’t think of anything more luxurious than a hot shower (or bath, as I am trying to be a bath person) than stepping out of hot water onto warm tiles. But first we have a ton of sanding and sealing to do.

We decided to lightly sand our stunning redwood paneling and ceiling. The secret to honoring the original grain and refreshing the look is to use 220-grit sand that buffs out wear and tear for a more uniform and elevated look. We will test flat/matte sealers that are mold-resistant and low to no shine! I want that natural look so bad it hurts. The current top contenders are Armstrong Clarke and Old Masters. Stay tuned for the winner! But look at that difference (so far) from just a gentle sand goin in the direction of the grain. I know it would be easier to paint it all, but I really feel like natural woods make a cabin – well, a cabin! This will soak up the stain and really punch boldly. I am thrilled!

All that being said, the picture window of the bath has this incredible view, and it’s a great spot to hand some planters to create a breathtaking view. So, I have been thinking (and researching) all the best hanging plant options that are easy to take care of and look great outside this window.

So stay tuned. We’ve got so much coming. Home takes time, and in this case, a lot of it. But the wait will be worth it! At least, I sure hope so. P.S. I’m so loving that y’all love my Kurt Cobain shirt and “cowboy hat.” Just call me the Cobain Cowboy from here on out. xoxox – ant
