Dreamy Demo Days

Progress is measured in steps, not miles, friends, and today, we took major steps forward with the cabin bathroom renovation, yes the bathroom. I know I know, I’ve been talking about renovating that room at the cabin for over a year. Life has a funny way of slowing you down sometimes.

But finally, we were able to kick things off, and it felt oh-so-good to move forward -complete with a mouse (another scorpion) and running out of water. All the wildlife aside, it was all worth it in the end.

Just look at the bathroom without the original vanity. The room seems massive without it. The new, slightly smaller vanity that floats will also make the space feel more open. Can you imagine the tile going halfway up the wall after spilling from the shower onto the floor seamlessly? In case you forgot, here’s a reminder of the desired look.

Bathroom Render Final

Now, things finally feel real. Thank you, progress.

We removed the leaking tub and exposed the plumbing behind the older failed tile. Of course, we had to cover up the massive DIY insulated picture frame window, as we had re-glazed it a few months ago. I don’t want to have to replace it again, although I miss all the natural light. Note that the framing and copper pipes are all in pretty good shape. I expected things to be a lot worse, another pleasant surprise because I have seen it all, friends.

Note that we will replace all the “pink stuff” with Rockwool insulation, my all-time favorite insulation, which is moisture, fire, and sound retardant. It’s a bigger investment. However, IMHO, this is a must-have in the cabin, as the bathroom is super wet, especially in the winter. The added ventilation will be great for preventing mold, too.

As if the above wasn’t enough, our evergreen 2×2 handmade tiles from Fireclay arrived! They are beyond gorgeous, handcrafted, with a gentle crackle and sheen that makes me scream. Each space I create needs a material that sings on its own – and boy, are these the ballads for the bathroom. We moved each box up the driveway to secure them safely in the future library in 90-degree weather. I was thankful for the tan and finally had this magical detail. Just look at the shine next to our mostly restored window hardware. Old and new fans rejoice!

Tile

What do you think of the progress so far? With the tub, vanity, and most previous tiles removed, we can start re-framing the tub for our tub option.

After that, we will replace the pink insulation with the more robust, moisture-resistant Rockwell, install the hardware and drywall, and begin retailing.

We kept the same footprint and plumbing placements to keep costs down. This is always a great way to save money, guys. I can’t wait to start the tile and see our moldboard come to life.

Okay, enough about the demo because all that work got me craving pizza and not just any pizza friends. I have been meaning to get your thoughts on which pizza style you prefer. The debate of which pizza style is best is hotter than a fresh slice. In my latest blog post, I’m sharing my thoughts on the main difference between Detroit and Chicago style pizza. I’ve had a chance to try both Detroit and Chicago pizza since I’ve been to both cities a lot for work. Honestly, they’re both fantastic, but I’m not sure which one is at the top of the charts for me. Check out the blog and let me know which is your favorite!
