Standards & Measurements

Many of the most common questions are related to sizing, such as the common question “How many ounces are in a bottle of wine”. As such, I figured standards and measurements would be a great place to start. First and foremost, it’s important to remember that the idea of a “standard drink” varies from country to country.

What is considered a “standard” glass of wine in the United States may not be the same size as one from another country. I’m using US sizes in this article, but you should look into your local standards if necessary to ensure accuracy. Just like how there are different wine bottle sizes, “standard” drink sizes can vary as well, so it’s best to learn these things right away.

1-How many ounces are in a bottle of wine?

Kevin Kelly PPneSBqfCCU Unsplash

While there is some variance in the sizes of wine bottles you’ll find on the shelf, a standard bottle of wine is 750 mL. This comes out to 25.4 fluid ounces of wine in a 750 mL bottle of wine, making the standard size a bit bigger than two cans of soda.

A “standard” bottle will give you five glasses per bottle. However, a half-sized bottle will only give you two glasses, whereas a “split” bottle only has one glass to offer. If you’re looking for something larger, a 1.5L “Magnum” bottle offers ten glasses per bottle.

Fun fact, though: the Magnum is nowhere near the largest size bottle of wine you can buy! That honor belongs to the Nebuchadnezzar, a 15L bottle containing 20 bottles’ worth of wine.

How large is a standard drink of wine?

How many ounces are in a bottle of wine

You’re probably wondering what a standard pour of wine amounts to in addition to How many ounces are in a bottle of wine. Well, the standard 5-ounce pour is what most people would consider as the baseline for a standard size, assuming the wine has a 12% ABV (Alcohol by Volume).

However, the standard drink size is based on both the amount of wine and the alcohol content, not just the size alone. To put things in perspective, a standard-sized beer—which is based on a 5% ABV—requires 12 ounces of beer. Alternatively, it only takes 1.5 ounces of 40% ABV liquor to equate to a “standard” drink.

While a 12% ABV isn’t uncommon, not every wine you taste will have this ABV. To figure out what a standard wine pour would be for your particular wine based on the alcohol content, you can use a standard drink calculator like this one. However, in terms of volume, 5 ounces is considered the standard size.

Is wine considered vegan or vegetarian?

Jodie Morgan B5eDYr SELo Unsplash

While vegans and vegetarians might be thinking that wine might be the perfect addition to a nice meal, it’s not always a guarantee that a particular type of wine will fit within a person’s dietary restrictions.

Many modern wines, especially those that are made quickly, are made using animal products to help fine and filter the wines. This works great from an efficiency standpoint. However, companies aren’t required to display the use of fining agents on their labels. This can make it very hard to determine whether or not that bottle of Pinot Noir you’ve been eyeing is vegan-friendly or not.

Fortunately, alternative diets have become more commonplace. In turn, many companies have started to label their products in an effort to attract more customers. As such, I would just look for sweet wines that are specifically labeled “Vegan” or “Vegetarian” if you want to truly play things safe.

How much alcohol can you safely drink in a day?

Zachariah Hagy 9nGnd9o DJM Unsplash

You’ve probably heard before that drinking wine daily can be healthy, and there might be some truth to that. While a bunch of 2019 studies found no noticeable health benefits to a daily red wine-tasting habit, they didn’t find any downsides either.

According to Harvard University, the benefits can come from “moderate drinking”, which “sits at the point at which the health benefits of alcohol clearly outweigh the risks”. To stay within the recommended guidelines using standard wine measurements and serving sizes, you’ll need to limit yourself to two glasses per day for men (or one glass a day for women). How many ounces are in a bottle of wine shouldn’t matter to much here.

What makes a wine “vintage”?

Todd Diemer SEFR62Upnqw Unsplash

You may, from time to time, find a “vintage” wine label at some of your local fancy restaurants. Question is, what exactly does this mean? While you might be thinking that it simply means the wine is old, that’s actually not the case.

When it comes to wine, the term “vintage” simply means that the grapes used to make the wine have been harvested in a single growing season. Alternatively, “non-vintage” wines use grapes from various growing seasons.

Best Practices

Now you know a few of the basics, such as “how many ounces are in a bottle of wine?” and basic safe drinking practices. However, I think we can expand on these points a bit, so I’ve gone into greater detail below. After all, knowing the standard pour size is great. Still, there is a lot to cover on storage, care, and the morning after. Let’s get to it.

How long does wine drunk last?

cheers white wine How many ounces are in a bottle of wine

Ultimately, how long the effects of alcohol will last depends on how much alcohol you drank in the first place. It’s widely accepted that your body can process about one standard drink per hour. In theory, this makes it easy to “track” your drunk based on the number of glasses you’ve consumed.

In reality, however, the science isn’t exact and will vary from person to person. There are many variables to consider, including gender, age, weight, and metabolic rate. The only precise way to measure this would be with a portable breathalyzer, which allows you to track your BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) in real-time.

What temperature to store red wine?

Thomas Franke LQ5o5boYE 8 Unsplash

The ideal storage temperature for red wine is 55°F, or about 13°C. You’ll want to place your standard bottles of wine in a dark, cool location for extended periods of storage, which is why many wine enthusiasts have dedicated wine cellars in their homes.

Fortunately, there is a bit of leeway when it comes to temperatures, so anywhere from 45°F to 65°F should be acceptable. Light exposure, however, doesn’t have any exceptions. It is vital that you ensure your wine is kept away from the light. Otherwise, you may open a bottle to find that your wine has gone bad.

Humidity is also a point worth considering. For storage, you should aim for a consistent 70%+/- humidity level. Thankfully, the practices listed above can be used for both red and white wines.

How long can you drink wine after opening the bottle?

Nathan Cima RTQKAxfUGMw Unsplash

Unlike general storage, there is a difference when it comes to dealing with open bottles of red and white wines. While you should ideally start drinking a standard red wine glass right away, the rest of the bottle can be corked and stored safely for up to five days without worry. Of course, you’ll want to provide the proper conditions for storage during this time frame.

Sadly, white wines don’t last quite as long after the bottle has been opened. You’ll only have three days to enjoy these wines before oxidation kicks in and the wines start to go bad. Sparkling wines are even more limited, essentially requiring you to drink the entire bottle within the first three hours for maximum enjoyment.

Even if you were to attempt to store them using the best practices, sparkling wines will have gone flat and soured after a few days.

Is decanting your wine worth it?

Using a decanter is an effective way to help enhance the taste of your wines, especially if you’re drinking red wines. Decanting is effective at removing the sediment from your wine while introducing oxygen to your wine. This, in turn, enhances the aromas and flavors of your wine, giving you a more enjoyable tasting experience.

Decanting is fairly simple, requiring the glass bottles of wine you’ll be drinking and a decanter. Pour the wine slowly into the decanter, slowing down after you’ve poured out half of the bottle. Watch to ensure that no sediment makes its way into the decanter during the process.

Depending on the wine, you can leave it in the decanter for up to two hours before enjoying it.

How to Get a Cork Out of a Wine Bottle?

Andreas Haslinger AZgVmUVqkwA Unsplash

The easiest way to remove a cork from your wine bottle is by using a corkscrew. These are widely available and very affordable, so I’d recommend picking up a few for your home. However, if you find yourself in the unlucky position of not having a corkscrew available, there are a few alternative options.

A simple option is to use a common house key instead of a corkscrew. You’ll want to take care while doing this as losing the cork and breaking the bottle are both potential problems. An alternative option is to remove the cork by using a lighter.

Heat the neck of the bottle using the lighter. This will cause the air inside the bottle to heat up and expand, eventually forcing the cork out.

Recommendations Plus How many ounces are in a bottle of wine.

Now you know all of the basics, from the correct size of the pour to alternative methods of bottle opening. The only thing we really haven’t gone over yet, though, is recommendations. As such, here are a few options you might enjoy!

What is the best wine for beginners?

How many ounces are in a bottle of wine with a meal

You have a bunch of different options available to you, even if you’ve never enjoyed wine before. If you’re going to be drinking at home, I would recommend picking up a few wine glasses before selecting your bottle(s).

While shopping, opt for a standard wine bottle size, as you don’t want to purchase a lot of something before you know if you’ll like it. Also, make sure to pour standard drink sizes so you can accurately assess each variety. Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, or Californian Zinfandel are all great options for first-time wine enjoyers.

I would say that Freixenet offers some of the best sweet wine for beginners!

What is the best wine for mimosas?

If you have the budget for it then champagne would be ideal for making mimosas. However, getting enough wine at an affordable price can be a challenge if you’re just hoping for a fun, get-together with your friends. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives available.

Offering in larger bottles and smaller bottles alike, most sparkling wines will make great mimosas. My personal recommendations? I would stick to cava or prosecco for tried-and-true results.

What is the best type of red wine, and How many ounces are in a bottle of wine?

Christine Isakzhanova X9YIV04Nmdc Unsplash

First off, “best” is highly subjective. “Best” could be the wine that gives you the most mL of wine at the lowest price, the highest quality of wine, the most flavorful, or a number of other factors worth considering. With that in mind, I can’t give you just one, but I can give you a few different recommendations.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Syrah are three of the best dry red wine types. Brachetto d’Acqui and Lambrusco are great options if you’re looking for the best semi sweet red wine. Brand options and limitations will come down to the available options in your local area, but I’ve found Napa Valley’s Dominus Estate and Opus One to both be good red wine brands.

No matter which one you decide is the best kind of red wine, just remember: they all can stain your kitchen rug the same, so be careful!

What are the best types of white wine?

How many ounces are in a bottle of wine

Just like with red wines, I can only give recommendations, not absolutes. Still, if you’re looking for great options to fill your white wine glasses, Pinot blanc, Riesling, and Grüner Veltliner are a few of the dry white wine types I would recommend. Want sweet white wine types specifically? Moscato, Eiswein, and Sauternes are all great options as well.

What are a few of the best fruit flavored wine brands?

Barefoot Wine, Manischewitz, Oliver Winery, and Arbor Mist are all brands that sell fruity flavored wines that make great beverages for nearly any summer outing. Want something really sweet? The first three brands listed above all sell options that can serve as dessert wines.
