I can’t believe it’s finally the weekend. We just got our new shower hardware system for the cabin, and I love it. The matte black yet modern silhouette is going to be a knockout in the final design. Plus, the price was a ca n’t-miss. We wanted to ensure that we didn’t have to redo any of the interior plumbing to avoid the expense, so we were careful to select hardware that could simply be swapped out while still producing a powerful stream that is water-conscious. I think we nailed it!
We are driving to the cabin as this hits your inbox to finish the irrigation. We had to move and lower a few things to ensure no areas of the clover field would dry out. I am optimistic that we got it all, but stay tuned! I am super excited because we have a back seat (and trunk) full of ferns to plant around the deck and a redwood tree that is seen outside the front door. It’s just so magical, you guys. Ferns of all kinds are ideal for planting around cabins due to their aesthetic, low maintenance requirements, and suitability for shaded environments. The giant trees cast an almost 24-hour shadow, so I can’t plant anything that needs a lot of direct light in this location – so ferns are a logical choice. Plus, I l just love how big and structural ferns get. I would plant them anyway.
Ferns help soften the hard edges, and flourish under the dappled lights. With their modest water and fertilizer needs and minimal pruning requirements, they are practical for cabin owners seeking to minimize upkeep or who aren’t onsite all year long – just like us! I can’t wait to show you how the planting goes in stories this weekend. See below for the zone between the deck and redwood tree we are going to fill in.
On another note, there’s nothing like cooking a home-cooked meal with fresh ingredients. The ultimate dream is to have a huge garden at the cabin with fresh vegetables to cook with. Perhaps even a moody greenhouse? I’ve learned something about harvesting broccoli seeds from my first two seasons. Check out my guide on how to plant broccoli seeds for everything you need to know. While we aren’t quite ready to commit to a greenhouse at the Cabin yet, we are planning it now!
